Durante el tour se grabo el documental &lt;a href="http://www.amazon.com/Eric-Clapton-Nothing-but-Blues/dp/630345996X"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Nothing But The Blues&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt; para la PBS, dirigido por Martin Scorsese, en el cual Eric habla acerca de sus influencias y se muestran tomas del concierto que tocó en la sala Fillmore West de San Francisco.  El nivel a lo largo de todo él es excepcional. King, siendo más atractivo al carecer de las sutilezas jazzísticas que caracterizan a los dos anteriores.  Jimi Hendrix y Stevie Ray Vaughan son buena muestra de su influencia.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Su estilo es aparentemente sencillo pero que resulta muy difícil de imitar.  De hecho, aquello que hace que sus frases funcionen es muy difícil de plasmar en el pentagrama y tablatura.  Es indispensable una meticulosa escucha de sus discos para empezar a reconocer los elementos que lo hacen único y original.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Desde el punto de vista guitarrístico su manera de tocar es poco ortodoxa.  Es zurdo pero toca la guitarra de un diestro, por lo que las cuerdas están en orden inverso.  Debido a ello sus &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;bendings&lt;/span&gt; se mueven en la dirección opuesta, al estirar la cuerda, baja, mientras que lo convencional es que suba.  A todo esto se añade una afinación no estándar, que aunque no existe consenso sobre ella, parece estar basada en un acorde menor.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;El tema &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Crosscut Saw&lt;/span&gt; forma parte del disco &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Born Under A Bad Sign&lt;/span&gt;, editado por el sello de soul &lt;a href="http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stax"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Stax&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt;, que es una recopilación de los primeros singles que grabó para la discográfica de Memphis en la segunda mitad de la década de 1960.  Esta fue la grabación que aumentó considerablemente el perfil de Albert King.  En él está acompañado por &lt;a href="http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&amp;amp;sql=11:gifrxqw5ldde"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Booker T. and the MGs&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt;, que eran la sección rítmica de la casa, habiendo ayudado a definir el sonido soul de los 60 gracias a sus colaboraciones junto a Otis Redding y Sam &amp;amp; Dave, y sus própios hits como &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Green Onions&lt;/span&gt;.  La mezcla de blues y soul se convirtió en una fórmula de éxito.  Buena parte de las canciones del mismo están basadas en &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;riffs funky&lt;/span&gt; que son el precedente de posteriores composiciones de Cream y Led Zeppelin entre otros.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;La estructura de &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Crosscut Saw&lt;/span&gt; es la de un blues de doce compases en el tono de A♭, cuyo patrón de acompañamiento se conoce como &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;rhumba blues&lt;/span&gt; o &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Memphis mambo&lt;/span&gt;.  Tiene una sonoridad que denota influencia de ritmos latinos y está basado en corcheas binarias, a diferencia de las ternarias del shuffle.  En la grabación no hay guitarra rítmica, por lo que el acompañamiento se ha de aprender a partir de lo que hace el bajo y el piano, cuyas partes son perfectamente aplicables a la guitarra.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;En lo que al solo mismo se refiere, es típico de Albert King, estando formado por frases cortas que mantienen una estructura de pregunta/respuesta, donde el ritmo, la dinámica y el tono son ingredientes esenciales.  Las notas pueden ser vistas desde la perspectiva de la escala de A♭ menor pentatónica, aunque Albert King, al igual que muchos otros guitarristas de blues, no parece organizar su vocabulario a partir de escalas, si no de frases que oye o que imita de otros músicos, manipulándolas para darles su toque personal.  Especial atención merecen los &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;bendings &lt;/span&gt;que son uno de sus rasgos más importantes.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Desde la perspectiva del fraseo cabe reseñar que siempre anticipa  la llegada del acorde y que sus frases empiezan en tiempos débiles, lo cual proyecta sensación de movimiento, conocida como &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;forward motion&lt;/span&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Como nota anecdótica vale la pena reseñar que el solo de Eric Clapton en &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Strange Brew&lt;/span&gt;, del disco de Cream &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disraeli_Gears"&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;"&gt;Disraeli Gears&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt;, es el mismo que el de &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Crosscut Saw&lt;/span&gt;. King (no existe parentesco familiar entre ellos).  Su estilo ha ejercido una gran influencia en multitud de guitarristas, siendo quizás el más famoso Eric Clapton, el cual adquirió la Gibson Les Paul que tocó con John Mayall y Cream porque su ídolo tocaba una.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;En Freddie King se produce una síntesis de diferentes estilos, ya que es de Texas de nacimiento, creció en el Chicago de los años 50 de Muddy Waters, Jimmy Rogers, etc. y grabó sus temas clásicos en los sellos King y Federal de Cincinnati.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Un elemento que caracteriza a Freddie King es que grabó numerosos instrumentales que han sido versionados frecuentemente, siendo el más famoso Hideaway, que fue un éxito en las listas de&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;pop y R&amp;amp;B de&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt; Billboard&lt;/span&gt; de 1961.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;El solo en See See Baby es típico de como Freddie King organiza sus improvisaciones y usa un buen número de frases caracteristicas de su estilo.  Está basado en el concepto pregunta/respuesta y se mueve entre la escala menor pentatónica en sexta posición y su extensión en la onceava posición.  Sin embargo, lo importante del análisis del solo es verlo más en función del vocabulario que de escalas, y como conecta con la sonoridad de los acordes.  De esa manera se podrán entender las notas que se escapan de la escala menor pentatónica, pero que al mismo tiempo forman parte del lenguaje blues tradicional.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Una aclaración sobre la técnica de Freddie King. Soy de la opinión de que en buena parte eso es debido a la ausencia de un vocabulario musical.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;El tema del vocabulario está directamente relacionado con el concepto de tradición musical.  Algunos estilos están más codificados que otros, son aparentemente más cerrados, donde la tradición juega un rol clave para entender como funcionan.  Es casi imposible encontrar un músico de blues actual que no venere a las figuras del pasado, a diferencia de ciertos tipos de rock y pop, donde en algunas ocasiones el mensaje que se proyecta es claramente transgresor, queriendo romper con el legado anterior.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;La tradición es un cuerpo vivo de conocimiento y experiencia de las generaciones anteriores, y no debe ser tomado como un dogma inalterable.  Es &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;el&lt;/span&gt; &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;saber de los mayores&lt;/span&gt;.  Se toma lo que funciona y se cambia aquello que es susceptible de ser mejorado.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Es común encontrarse con figuras destacadas que han sabido sintetizar todo lo que ha sucedido con anterioridad y al mismo tiempo articular un estilo personal y novedoso.  Que las grandes baladas de Hendrix lleven el sello de Curtis Mayfield, no lo hace menos original.  Que a su vez Stevie Ray Vaughan se vea influenciado por Hendrix a la hora de componer &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Lenny&lt;/span&gt; tampoco.  Todo lo contrario, les da una amplia base sobre la que poder construir.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Tradicionalmente la transmisión de ese conocimiento ha sido de forma oral.  El músico imitaba los discos y lo que veía en vivo, aprendía del trato con otros músicos.  El avance de las nuevas tecnologías, el auge de escuelas de música moderna, la aparición de textos antes ausentes (transcripciones, métodos, revistas, etc.) puede que estén cambiando la metodología, pero estoy seguro que el fin sigue siendo el mismo.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;La fuente de la que uno crea hay que nutrirla con algo, &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;alimentar el manantial&lt;/span&gt;.  Es frecuente encontrarse con la cita para romper las reglas hay que conocerlas.  La época más innovadora de los Beatles está sustentada sobre un periodo de formación donde la imitación de las primeras figuras del rock’n’roll (Elvis, Chuck Berry, Carl Perkins) fue un factor clave.  A simple vista &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Sgt. Pepper&lt;/span&gt; no se parece mucho a &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Blue Suede Shoes&lt;/span&gt; o &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Mistery Train&lt;/span&gt;, pero se me antoja difícil el primero sin los segundos.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Tema aparte, son aquellos que no superan el periodo de imitación.  Aún así, esta puede resultar de lo más curiosa.  Eric Clapton menciona como durante la grabación de &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;From The Cradle&lt;/span&gt;, por más que intentaba imitar las versiones originales que estaba versionando, siempre terminaba sonando como él mismo.  Que ahí radicaba la belleza de todo el ejercicio.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;La formación no es igual en todos, de la misma forma que el talento no está repartido de igual manera.  El hecho que el primer disco de Pat Martino sea sumamente original, a pesar de su juventud en el momento de la grabación, no quiere decir que sea la regla con la que todos nos tenemos que medir.  Unos maduran antes, otros más tarde.  El talento no está repartido por igual, y los contextos en los que uno se desarrolla pueden ser diametralmente diferentes.  Lo importante es el proceso, hacer lo correcto y disfrutar de la experiencia.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Puede que lo que se entienda por vocabulario y tradición musical sea algo muy concreto (unas frases o &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;licks&lt;/span&gt;, una manera de acompañar, unos acordes determinados, unas estructuras, etc.) o algo más abierto (Pat Metheny ve el jazz más como un verbo que un sustantivo, una manera de hacer), pero me resulta fácil verlo como un trampolín que nos ayude a descubrir la creatividad y lo original que hay en nosotros.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;El trompetista de jazz Clark Terry lo resume de manera magistral: &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;imitación, asimilación, innovación&lt;/span&gt;. No es de extrañar pues son el recurso más usado.  Gran número de frases están basadas en ellas.  El hecho que éstas contengan cinco notas hace que se pueda frasear y crear melodías de manera natural, sin que haya que omitir notas que entren en conflicto con la armonía.  Además son relativamente fáciles de digitar en la guitarra.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Sin embargo, es muy común encontrarse con vocabulario que refleja más claramente la armonía.  A menudo esto sucede porque las frases están basadas en el sonido del acorde, usando algunas o todas las notas del mismo. Esta tradición llega al continente americano de la mano de los esclavos negros, pues es un rasgo esencial de gran parte de música africana.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;El concepto consiste en una frase musical que consta de dos partes, una que actúa como pregunta, y otra que la responde.  Son miles las composiciones de blues que organizan la melodía y la letra alrededor de esta idea. Son innumerables las canciones y &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;riffs&lt;/span&gt; basados en ella, siendo una parte integral del lenguaje de la guitarra en esos estilos.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Son varios los factores que contribuyen a ello.  Por un lado, la combinación de intervalos que la componen hace que sea relativamente fácil generar melodías con ella.  El constar sólo de cinco notas y carecer de semitonos, hace que las melodías sean claramente reconocibles y que, por regla general, no entren en conflicto con la armonía.  Por otro lado, desde un punto de vista técnico, la escala tiene una digitación que resulta muy cómoda y natural en la guitarra.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Existen varias maneras de digitar la escala menor pentatónica. Ello, sin duda alguna, se debe a que es el tono favorito de de los guitarristas de blues rural del Mississippi.  Cuando muchos de estos músicos del sur de USA empiezan a emigrar a las ciudades industriales del norte, especialmente Chicago, llevan con ellos su tradición musical, a la cual añaden instrumentos eléctricos.  La figura más importante de este movimiento es &lt;a href="http://www.muddywaters.com/"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Muddy Waters&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt;, no sólo por sus propias grabaciones, que son clásicas, si no también porque por sus grupos pasan algunos de los músicos más importantes del género, como &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buddy_Guy"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Buddy Guy&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt; y &lt;a href="http://www.littlewalter.net/"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Little Walter&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt;, entre otros.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Mientras en el tono de A mayor todos los riffs se pueden tocar con cuerdas al aíre, ello no sucede así en E, donde el acompañamiento sobre B7(V) obliga a trasportar el riff a la segunda posición. Músico de sesión de incontables grabaciones de los 70 y 80, es uno de esos "guitarrista de guitarristas."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Recientemente ha añadido a su web &lt;a href="http://mr335.tv/"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;MR.335 TV&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt;, en donde tiene mucho material didáctico de primera calidad, que forma parte de la master class &lt;a href="http://truefire.com/335blues/LC335blues.html"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;335 Blues&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt;, un pack de 4 CD-ROM interactivos.  Si uno se da de alta, se pueden bajar las partituras con TAB de todos los ejemplos.  ¡Suena mortal!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;La mayor parte de ellos tienen que ver con su estilo de tocar blues.  Es uno de los grandes estilistas del género, inmediatamente reconocible por su sonido, fraseo, &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;touch&lt;/span&gt; y selección de notas.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Su discografía como líder es bastante extensa ya, a menudo en lo que se llama &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;smooth jazz&lt;/span&gt;.  No por ello ha dejado de grabar blues. Es conocido como el ritmo de &lt;a href="http://chrisgoesrocks.blogspot.com/search?q=jimmy+reed"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Jimmie Reed&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt;, en honor a este músico, el cual hizo un uso exhaustivo del mismo.  No obstante, este acompañamiento ya se encuentra presente en las grabaciones de los años treinta del siglo XX de &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Johnson_%28musician%29"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Robert Johnson&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt;, en composiciones como &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Sweet Home Chicago&lt;/span&gt;, &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;When You Got A Good Friend&lt;/span&gt; o &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;I Believe I'll Dust My Broom&lt;/span&gt;.  Es un ritmo de capital importancia, pues sobre él se asienta  una gran parte de la guitarra rítmica de blues.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Un blues de doce compases en A se compone de tres acordes: A, D y E. Sin embargo, estos acordes rara vez son tocados tal cual. Lo más común es que sean sustituidos por un patrón más sofisticado. En la Fig.1 vemos el patrón de Jimmy Reed para A, D y E usando cuerdas al aire.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Para conseguir una correcta articulación hay que ejecutarlo usando golpes de púa descendentes, acentuando los que caen a tiempo y asegurándonos de que con la palma de la mano apagamos ligeramente las cuerdas, consiguiendo así un sonido más claro y compacto. Esta es una característica esencial de estilos como el blues y el jazz, aunque también es muy común en el rock y funk.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;En 4/4, el compás se compone de 4 tiempos, siendo la negra representación gráfica de ello (Fig. 1).  Cada tiempo o pulso (&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;beat&lt;/span&gt; en inglés) se puede dividir así mismo en dos partes iguales que se llaman corcheas, y su valor corresponde al 50% del tiempo.  Generalmente se dice que cae &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;a tierra&lt;/span&gt; o &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;a tiempo&lt;/span&gt; la primera corchea, la cual está justo en el tiempo, mientras la segunda, cae &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;a contratiempo&lt;/span&gt;, o en el &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;y&lt;/span&gt; del tiempo (Fig. 2).  Las corcheas se pueden agrupar de 4 en 4 (Fig. 3).  Este tipo de corcheas se suelen denominar &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;straight&lt;/span&gt; o &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;even&lt;/span&gt;, expresiones en inglés que en ocasiones se añaden al pentagrama como texto. De su segundo disco, &lt;a style="font-weight: bold;" href="http://www.amazon.com/Mr-Wonderful-Fleetwood-Mac/dp/B000306074/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;amp;s=music&amp;amp;qid=1215708765&amp;amp;sr=1-1"&gt;Mr. Wonderful&lt;/a&gt; , proviene la transcripción del solo de If You Be My Baby, blues de medio tiempo en D.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Lo que me llama la atención de Peter Green en general, y de este solo en particular, es que a primera vista no es técnicamente dificil de tocar, pero con el paso del tiempo uno va descubriendo todos los detalles y sutilezas, y se da cuenta de la profundidad de lo que dice.  Como dicen en inglés, &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;less is more&lt;/span&gt;.
